Science of Reading at WUSD

With the support of the WUSD School Board, WUSD literacy coaches, school leaders, teachers, and administrators, the follwoing steps guide elementary literacy programming:

  1. Partner with outcome-driven SchoolsCubed for consulting and training in structured literacy and the Science of Reading through the
    2025-26 school year.

  2. Implement literacy coaches at each site to support staff in gathering and analyzing data and lead structured literacy instructional
    conversations alongside leadership, and

  3. Implement a universal structured literacy curriculum, intervention curriculum, and assessment tools that support the Science of Reading.
    Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, the aligned tools for implementation include:

    1. Into Reading by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

    2. Sytemic Instruction in Phonological Avareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS) by Collaborative Classroom

    3. Sound Partners by Voyager Sopris Learning

    4. DIBELS 8 & Lectura via mCLASS by Amplify

    5. aimswebPlus by Pearson

  4. Remain informed of current literature and research around the Science of Reading, structured literacy, the Science of Learning, and the
    Science of Writing to inform best practices and continuous improvement across the district.

  5. Commit to continued learning aout structured literacy, explicit and direct instruction, and supporting students' learning by implementing
    research-based instructional strategies at elementary and secondary levels.
